Course Description:

This course is intended to introduce students to the concepts and principles of sustainable agriculture. The economic, environmental, and social elements of agroecosystem sustainability will be addressed. This course uses case studies and field trips to connect sustainable agricultural ideas to local farming systems.

On successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Understand "sustainable" agriculture and apply this definition to crop and livestock production systems.
  • Identify sustainable practices to reduce agriculture's negative environmental impacts
  • Integrate and quantify ecosystem services at work in production systems
  •  Outline the social, economic, and political dynamics that are shaping sustainable agriculture and food systems (ecological, social, and economic).
  • Recognize and implement essential system principles into system design and planning.
  • Implement some sustainable practical tools and methods
